An Introduction to Relationship & Sex Education in SEND Settings

A practical one-day course for professionals working with primary-aged children within SRP and SEND provision.

Schools are increasingly reporting challenges around online safety, boundaries, relationships and safeguarding within SEND provision, alongside growing recognition that children and young people with SEND require RSE that is meaningful, accessible and developmentally appropriate.

Many professionals want to deliver this support confidently but can feel underprepared when navigating sensitive topics within specialist and SRP settings.

Course Aim

This course is designed to support professionals working with children and young people with SEND to deliver safe, inclusive, age and developmentally appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).

It explores practical approaches to communication, safeguarding, relationships, boundaries, online and offline safety, while building staff confidence in meeting a wide range of needs within SEND and SRP provision.

This course focuses on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) for children with SEND in line with current statutory guidance and Government expectations, in order to develop essential life skills.

Learning Outcomes
– Understand the impact of personal values and attitudes when supporting children and young people with SEND in relation to RSE.

– Explore approaches to delivering safe, inclusive and developmentally appropriate RSE in line with individual needs.
– Develop confidence in working with parents and carers to support child safety online and offline.
– Equip staff with techniques to effectively communicate sensitive topics such as bodies, emotions & boundaries.
– Understand the statutory guidance relating to RSE within SEND provision and recognise the links between RSE and safeguarding.
